And then there was nothing left to pack… three packers and three movers, plus eight hours, and everything I own – more or less – is now on its way to WA. One day was all it took. Now I’m camping in my sister’s spare bedroom for the next few days, leaching off her cable modem and soda supplies, until I get to fly out on Friday morning. Aside from cable blowing me off to pick up their boxes, and my Bose speakers not being tagged correctly, this has been a stress-free day and I’m still in a bit of shock: both that the packing was so fast yet stress-free and that I still had so much crap in the condo, even after I cleaned it out. Anyway, the process continues tomorrow, with some loose ends to wrap up: in just a few more days I’ll be out of CT (until Christmas time anyway)…

Yet Another Smoking Ban
Seattle Post-Intelligencer: Forbidden after July 1, 2004, is open flame gas and charcoal grilling on apartment or condominium decks [in Washington] made from combustible materials and lacking an overhead sprinkler. This means no grilling on the vast majority of wooden decks. Some — not all — metal and concrete decks bracketed by non-flammable walls might be exempt if there are no flammable materials nearby. Electric grills remain legal.

Are You Excited?
“Are you excited [yet]?” This is the question that has been most frequently asked of me, over the last couple of weeks. It puzzles me, a good deal, for a couple of different reasons. First and foremost is, why wouldn’t I be? I mean, I’m starting a new job in a new city on a new coast with a kick ass company; it’s obvious to me that I’d be excited, so I find that asking this question at all would be a bit curious. And anyway, right now, I’m rather distracted by some of the little things.

Northeast-ism #1: Washington
Obviously this is something I’ve become acutely aware of recently, but it’s something I’ve wondered about for a while. Whenever I mention “Washington” around here, the first question I get is “State or DC?” Of course, seeing as it’s been a topic of conversation lately, it’s begun to irk the shit outta me, if only because I can’t really figure out why they ask it.

Condom Shortage?
CNN: Michelle Duggar is all smiles after delivering her 15th child, but she may be ready for more, her family says.
Good God, man, someone ship some birth control to Arkansas!
Against All Odds
A few Rants ago I proclaimed this site as “Low Carb” which sort of went off its track into a blurb about why average isn’t the bodily “norm” for people in the US. Basically, the whole point of it was to point out the following: since magazine models are airbrushed beyond belief and act-ors/-resses are made over for many hours before appearing on a screen, wouldn’t it make sense to expect normal people to not look like them? In fact, I don’t expect those people to look like that in reality! At least most of them – some might, but a very small number of them. I would hope that the “norm” would be more average, and to that end, I applaud a particular store that I found in my local mall.

Since When Does Fragile Mean “Drop Kick”?
I’ve had an electric drum set for a few years now. It’s been fun, but since I started playing bass a couple of years ago, I recently realized that I haven’t touched the drum set since. After going to a local music store and hearing they’d offer me next to nothing for it, I decided to sell it on eBay. The four boxes left my local Staples fine – look at how the boxes arrived at their destination, courtesy of UPS…

Sentimental Baggage
For the last 72 hours I’ve been on a tear, ripping through every room of my condo, weeding out the things that I have no intention of moving to Washington with me next month… and in the process, I believe I have broken the Theory of Relativity – there is no way that one person can have amassed this amount of crap in just one condo.

Frasier Finale
Frasier says, “While it’s tempting to play it safe, the more we’re willing to risk, the more alive we are. In the end, what we regret most are the chances we never took. And I hope that explains, at least a little, this journey on which I’m about to embark… Goodnight, Seattle.” Offers closure and a bit of inspiration – or even explanation – to his characters, but because of the setting of his radio booth, I think it was a pretty good way to end the show, saying good-bye to his listeners, and in this case, viewers. After all, being Frasier for twenty years… quite a long time with a strong following. I just think it ended the show a little better than “Friends” did last week.
Adult Happy Meals?
Almost went off the road when I heard this one driving to work this morning, but it’s real: McDonald’s now has Adult Happy Meals. If the standard kids meal is with a cheeseburger and the “mighty” kids meal comes with a double cheeseburger, what the hell would be in the adult version? A triple cheeseburger? Two BigMacs with a Tums for a toy? Strangely enough, the McMarketing department is alive and thinking: the “Go Active! Happy Meal” includes a salad, a bottle of water, a “Stepometer to track your steps”, and some fitness guide… I always find it amusing to see someone jump on a bandwagon when it can, and, well, McD’s just jumped in, head first.
Fire Rumsfeld?
I have two simple questions on this topic.

School For Sale
eBay: FORMER SCHOOL BUILDING FOR LEASE, NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT
At 2.5 million, it’s a bit much for a single person to nick, but it’s cheap for a house with a full kitchen and indoor basketball court on 2.8 acres (given the price of land in Connecticut). It does make me wonder about asbestos and lead paint, though.
Bullying
I happened to catch a part of the Today show today. I think it was Today – Katie Couric was on, so it musta been NBC. Anyway, Katie tells us about how the majority of the HS kids that have committed school-related shootings, over the last ten years, have been bullied at some point. I don’t find this surprising, but whatever. She then goes on to say that some kid was going to have to go to court for defending himself and they were going to talk to him, live. Caught my interest, so I kept it on. Twas a mistake: now my brain hurts.
