Today, On Today

As I’m sure most people have heard already this week, the current Governor of California (go Ahr-nald!) has come under criticism for calling an obstinate group of Democrats “girly men”. And of course it got some airplay. For two days now – who could pass up a political Schwarzenegger snafu? Because there couldn’t possibly be anything else going on that deserves to be on the news. I had the misfortune of seeing some more coverage on today’s Today show.

Karate Kid… Time Paradox?

How odd, to see a movie like The Karate Kid be mentioned with something that is typically associated with science fiction, but I think it fits. You’ve all see the three Karate Kid movies. I know you have. It’s not scientifically possible to have missed them all, if only because they’ve been replayed on cable stations galore for years. What you probably haven’t noticed is how great the casting was for the entire trilogy.

Washington-ism #1: Makes Ya Go Hm

Having been watching the news for just over a month now, I have to admit that the WA state government is a real-time experiment in modern politics. And quite often it makes for a better comedy scene than sitcoms or reality does… by no means does this mean that the populous shouldn’t be involved in the government process, but it does mean that the elected officials might want to move a bit more slowly on certain topics. That’s all.

Gay Marriage Revisited

And so there was a proposal to amend the Constitution so that same-sex marriages would be considered illegal. And it failed to be passed, with the support of 48 votes (50 voted not to pass it and 2 were caught in the john during the vote) – I also think that Amendments need 2/3 support, so it was not a close margin. What does this mean? Simple: none of this will be decided before the election and we can expect a lot more press on this issue over the years to come… un-freakin-believable.

Northeast-ism #3: Sandwiches

Ah, behold the notion of a grinder. What’s a grinder? Bad question to ask… there’s more names for a submarine styled sandwich than you could ever know, but “grinder” is one that’s particular to most of Connecticut. In fact, I’ve found that most people out this way are more protective of their sandwich names than they are over the debate of Coke being “soda” or “pop”. Which sandwich are you?

Jetta Go Vroom

Jetta go vroom. Make Randy happy. Happy Randy is going to have to put block under gas pedal so Randy doesn’t get ticket in WA. [Randy is also parked about five buildings away from where he works, due to arriving in parking lot at 11am, so if someone on campus sees him wandering around looking bewildered, it’s because he forgot where he parked.]

If the Media Polices Government, Who Polices the Media?

Think about it. The media keeps on waving their forty year old We-Caught-Nixon flag as an “excuse” to burrow their noses into every little thing that they think they should be allowed to report on. OK, fine, I’m all for freedom of the press, but shouldn’t there also be some constraint shown by the media-at-large?

The Last 48 Hours

I’m sitting in my temp housing, watching the sun hover over the water, and amazed that it’s 8:45pm and it’s still, um, rather bright out there. I’m without an active ‘net connection (and I think I hosed something else while trying to get the notebook on the LAN at work today), I’m out of Rainier cherries, and I desperately miss my cars and Teva’s [insert any sort of thing here]. However, as a change of pace, I’d rather focus on what’s been good that has been going on.

Northeast-ism #2: Pride

It took me about ten hours in total to get to my temporary housing, here in Seattle. I was supposed to be on a plane in CT at 1:40 but due to “weather related incidents” it didn’t take off til 2:30-ish. Thankfully my connecting flight was also delayed, and for the same reasons, so I walked from one jet, through gate 25, and went directly into the next jet, through gate 23 – shortest layover, ever.
