Snowy Reflections

An open letter to all of the people in New England that are sneering, laughing and taunting the pacific northwest over the recent snowfall while frolicking in their strange warm weather: Piss off.

We got 2″ in Redmond. We also have no snow plows, no salt, no sand, and we’re not going to break 32 degrees today so everything is pretty much frozen. Caused schools to be closed in over five counties, in Western WA alone. It also caused the entire Microsoft Campus to closed. My Jeep door was frozen shut this morning and there was an inch or so of snow on my windshield – I miss my garage! – and I had to wait for it to warm up this while the snow and ice melted off my windshield. When I went looking for my trust old snow brush it occurred to me: I hadn’t used it since moving from CT. I can’t even find the thing.

Minimal snow. School closures. Work closures. An obvious lack of snow removal equipment. I haven’t had to use a snow brush since my last winter in CT. Hm.

We’ll see who laughs last this winter. *g*

Need More Proof?

BBC News: Rare stamp ‘used on US post vote’ A rare stamp worth as much as $200,000 (£155,473) may be on an envelope sealed in a ballot box after the US mid-term elections, poll officials say.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again: FL shouldn’t be allowed to vote in any national election.

They simply can’t handle the pressure.

If It Walks Like A Duck…

CNN: Rose Rock, the mother of comedian Chris Rock, claims she was racially discriminated against when she was seated but ignored for a half hour at a Cracker Barrel restaurant along the South Carolina coast.

Discrimination? DISCRIMINATION?! How about just bad service?! It was in the south – they mighta been taking the time to brew fresh sweet tea… Even out here, I’ve had to wait days to get service in some places. Lenscrafters? Glasses ready in about an hour 168 hours.

Cracker Barrel has in the past faced numerous lawsuits and a federal inquiry over complaints of refusing to serve black customers, discriminating against minority workers and firing gay employees. The company has taken steps to rebuild its folksy image and reach out to minorities.

Oh. Well, then. Didn’t know that.

Rock, who is from Georgetown, said she and her 21-year-old daughter were the only blacks at the chain’s Murrells Inlet restaurant in April. She said when she asked the manager about the delay she was told they could have a free meal.

Ya, see. Now I say bad service again. And April?! It took you that long to feel discrimanted? Does Chris Rock have a new DVD coming out or something? Did he just need the press? Next thing ya know Al Sharpton will get involved with the case.

The Rev. Al Sharpton will join Rock on Wednesday in South Carolina to announce that Sharpton’s Action Network will finance the planned lawsuit.

Oh for fuck’s sake… Quack.

I Like Dogs…?

Looks like I’m going to be a student again.

Nope, not the Doctorate. Ha! Who has time for that? Too many 360 games queued up as it is. Not for another Masters, either – just a few classes that’s focused around game programming, but what’s nice is that it’s being offered by the University of Washington so it’s For Real.

I checked with alumni from UW: take a class and you insta-support purple and gold, especially during the Apple Cup. At least it won’t conflict with my former school – while both schools are Div-I, U-Dub is in a completely different grade compared to the [Sacred Heart] Pioneers… not all Div-I schools are equal, I reckon.

Good think I actually like Huskies… big furry beasties.

HO SHVIT!

It’s amused me over the years how some words from the “early” days of chat have become “common” words. Especially when the words are typos. True stuff like :) and l33t were typed like that on purpose but the other things like “pr0n” and “LOL!!11!1!” started as typos. “HO SHVIT!” is another, it’s one that about 18 years old, so most of you probably weren’t around to see it. Read it as a “HOLY SHIT” that got mauled because of a half-duplex terminal broadcasting at 300 baud (as in 0.3Kbps versus a dial up 56Kbps modem or a broadband 10000Kbps connection). Common error at the time, but one that has stuck with me for years and still makes me laugh.

But that’s not what I want to talk about… you see, my parents are moving.

The Slate Makes Sense?

The Slate: The “international community” has a chance to behave as if the term were more than a polite or ironic euphemism. If there’s a single national leader in the world who likes this new development, he hasn’t said so. The U.N. Security Council quickly voted 13-0 to condemn the nuclear test. Several nonmembers have joined in the criticism. Now all we need is a next step—action.

How serious is the situation with North Korea? The Slate and I agree on the issue. Insanity. Yet what’s worse is that I don’t know what’s more insane: the fact that North Korea got to this point over the last 10 years or that the politicians are more interested in using this to advance their own respective party and campaign since election day is within a month.

I can’t believe that there’s not a more unified front in DC over this: the impact of this could make 9/11 look like the Boston Tea Party.

Rock Bottom

CNN: North Korea’s claim to have tested a nuclear weapon drew widespread condemnation Monday, with the United States calling it potentially a “provocative act” and even close ally China strongly opposing it.

Wild shit: US, China, and Russia all agree that this is a pooch screw and they’re all bashing it. Vocally. First time in a long time that the three more powerful nations have been united in their opinions… of course Japan, South Korean, and Australia are also on board, but that’s hardly a surprise, given their location. All of Europe too, and that’s remarkable: some nations in the EU will do anything just to prove that they aren’t American.

You know you’ve hit Rock Bottom when even France won’t support you.

Oo! We Got a New Fence!

Looks like a new law got passed to “secure” our southern border. Does a big fence make a border more secured? Better than an empty open field or a massive hole in an existing fence, so yeah, I’ll say so. More secure. I also heard a sound bite that may or may not be true: about LA passing a law that prevents illegal immigrants from renting a room with in the city limits. I need to confirm that, though, but for now, lets assume I heard it right.

To both I say “about fuckin’ time”.
