PSBJ: Washington state’s combined state and average local sales tax rate is 8.78 percent, the third highest in the country, according to the Tax Foundation. The state’s tax rate is 6.5 percent; the average local sales tax rate is 2.28 percent. The highest combined rates were in Tennessee (9.41 percent), California (9.06), Washington state (8.78), Oklahoma (8.44) and Louisiana (8.43).
…and in King County it jumps to 9.5% for general merchandise and 10% on restaurant and beverage, which is more than every other state listed.
It’s about time someone else noticed.
Yeah, but it’s one of the best states to have a business in. Whiner.
I don’t see your tax dollars coming here. :P
There’s high sales tax in NY state too (county+state combined). They even collect it online.

I’ve even heard stories about NY state workers going to border town malls in CT and NJ trying to determine how many out of state shoppers are from NY by identifying NY State license plates on the cars parked there.
This is crazy! Howd u know that?! Good to make other people aware!
It was a family member of mine who heard that story on the news about the suspicious cars crusing around Garden State Plaza Mall and Danbury Fair Mall parking lots. Apparently it got leaked to the press and then they stopped crusing for cars with NY license plates shortly afterwards. I’m not sure if NY State ever confirmed or denied if this really happened.
However, I did dig up this about a border-cam on the Massachusetts-New Hampshire border

Doesn’t Washington have no Income Tax though?
In NY we have Income Tax (between 4% & 6.85%) AND one of the highest sales tax (8.25% in my county).
I’d rather take the 10% food/beverage tax than getting hit by both.

On a related topic, more New Yorkers are leaving the state mostly because of high taxes.
