I gotta cry foul on this one…
Head over to the Safari download page. Answer me this: with the exception of “Resizable Text Fields” is there one feature on this list that IE, Firefox or Opera doesn’t offer right now? “Innovation” my ass. It’s the same old song and dance, Steve. Jobs, I mean, not the ‘goat.
And I’m all for having another browser for Windows. Competition brings new features, so I’m happy with that. I’m still pissed at Netscape for not stepping up their own feature list back in the day. But I don’t buy the spin, this time. Is it faster than IE? Apple Marketting seems to think so – I haven’t tried it out yet so I can’t say. I can say that my own blog feels like it’s opening slower on my Mac mini than it does on XP [with IE 7]. And even if Safari is 2x as fast as IE, we’re talking what? 500ms versus 250ms for most pages?
So I grabbed the beta anyway. Looks… interesting. Exactly like OSX, aside from the minimize/maximize/close buttons. Which are neither Vista standard or OSX like – they’re just… different. Hm. the thing opened with the top edges off the screen… uh, where’s my EW arrow? I got the grips in the lower right… but wha? Oh you gotta be fuckin’ with me.
Why the hell can’t I resize my window with the window borders?!
I want the 45 seconds I wasted installing this back, seeing as “seconds” are so important these days…
You can’t resize from any border because that’s the way apps work on the Mac: the window borders are for dragging, not resizing.
Safari has its own font smoothing technology and comes with its own embedded fonts. This is as pure a port of a Mac app to Windows as they could come up with.
Which is what’s wrong with it: it’s Safari for WINDOWS. Not Safari-for-the-Mac-that-runs on Windows. If I wanted a Mac app, I’d run OSX. I think they dropped the ball on this one.
After all, Mac users bitch that Microsoft Office works “too much like a PC” app on the Mac – fair play that I’m now able to bitch that Safari works “too much like a Mac” app on a PC! :)
I actually find it way slower than Firefox and IE7. It didnt automatically transfer my bookmarks. I cant figure out how to add more search plugins. And yea, not being able to resize with the borders is just infuriating. Im sticking to Firefox.
That’s cuz they give you their favorites library and put all the imported links in a “Imported” folder… lame.
