Gull-wing Salute

Well, there’s something you don’t see every day.

I was driving on Redmond Way today, attempting to get to Costco – such a dumb thing to do after noon on a Sunday – and I noticed that there was a sleek, silver car in front of me with a black grid overlaid on its tail lights. Insta-recognition: De Lorean [DMC-12]. If only to prove the point, the license plate was a variant of “OUT-A-TIME”, a la “Back to the Future”.

You see, everyone knows the car from the movie, but I was a fan even before that – there was at least one De Lorean that used to tool around Connecticut in the early 80’s… stainless steel silver – when not many cars were – and gull-wing doors – when virtually no other car had them… and with car lovers all through my family, I was aware of it long before Dr. Brown retooled one for time travel. Hell, there’s even two on the main campus that I used to drool over on a weekly basis.

After leaving the mad house that is Sunday-Afternoon@Costco, I was heading back towards Redmond Way, when I noticed the five De Loreans parked behind Outback… bet yer ass I did a quick U-Turn and stopped to pay homage to the silver beasties… especially since the car is over 20 years old. Nearly as impressive as the 1948 Tucker Torpedos that are still on the road, but for different reasons.

Such a beautiful piece of engineering, even 25 years later.

  1. I actually saw one broken down on the side of the road last week, it was rusted and beat up. I was actually kinda disappointed that someone could do that to such a legendary car. Glad to see a few people still keep them in good shape.
