Dear Alt Nation, Channel 21 on Sirius Radio

I’ve listened to your channel for quite some time. You generally play a good mix of alternative music, both old and new. You do sometimes repeat the same songs a few times a day, but I can understand that. As it is, I’m sitting at a computer for about nine hours everyday: I just leave the streaming client play itself out. For the most part: I do turn it off at 3:58 (PDT) every day because Madison… her singing intro is just, well, annoying. I know it’s meant to be but it doesn’t mean I have to listen to it. After the intro she’s OK, but, just, damn. It’s painful at 4pm.

Right now, though, I feel obligated to point out something wrong with regards to your programming… the Beastie Boys are not alternative rock. They are old. They are wannabe rappers. They are played no less than five times everyday. The same five songs everyday because they aren’t putting out new music. It’s like these program directors that are working for a radio station but have a “favorite” band that they try to inject into the playlist no matter how much it doesn’t fit. It would be like Left of Center playing Styx or Chicago: it just doesn’t go. You… you program director bastard, you may like the Beastie Boys – that’s fine for you but for fuck’s sake stop putting it on Alt Nation!

It’s hardly alternative: it’s simply annoying.

  1. LMFAO. Hah! Omg, finally you do it. Please god say you sent this to Alt Nation.

The beastie boys were once a cultural icon…for Eminem. I am sure of this. No matter, I don’t like any of that white-boy rap bullshit.

  2. I haven’t sent it to them… yet.

The thing is that when you go to the site they say:

“The latest alternative rock and the best alt rock of the ‘90s. Green Day, Radiohead, White Stripes, Jimmy Eat World and the next big thing before it becomes so big you can’t stand it anymore.

What we play: Nirvana, The White Stripes, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Coldplay, Gorillaz, Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Weezer, The Killers, Foo Fighters and many more.”

Where on EARTH do the Beastie Boys fit in there? I mean I could see if it WAS a station that was playing rap or hip hop… at least the BB’s fit into that genre, right? Even if you don’t like THEM you like the genre… granted I don’t like them (and I used to be OK with them when I didn’t hear them 25 times a week) but they aren’t even supposed to BE on the channel, IMHO!

    ARGH!

  3. Maybe what they mean by “alternative” is what white boys listen to. I certainly don’t know of any “african american” people listening to beastie boys…or want to…heh.

  4. what a shockingly racist comment:)…

hey randy. if there is scrolling text at the bottom of the streaming player that displays the currently playing song then it would be fairly easy to write a program that would mute the speakers for the duration of the annoying song… just a thought. I saw an article on doing something similar here http://www.codeproject.com/tools/CatchCulator.asp

  5. Interesting… I know that in the streamer that I use, I can set an alarm for certain artists… maybe I should talk to the guy about a muting alarm too :)

  6. I agree. SIRIUS tends to overplay a lot of music, even stuff I enjoy, like System Of A Down. They played it so much that I started getting sick of it. Gnarls Barkley and Matisyahoo (sp?) also. Right Now, Pearl Jam(Unemployable) on Alt Nation is another one. I enjoy Pearl Jam, but it’s overplayed. More variety, please! Don’t burn me out on the same song every 2 hours again and again and again…

Crap, now U2 (Vertigo) on Alt Nation. Once Apple made this into an IPOD commercial I started hating it. These songs are ALL overplayed!!! Please Help!

  7. Ugh.

They’re playing Beastie Boys (Fight For Your Right TO Party) on Alt Nation right now. I never liked this song.

  8. the Beastie Boys aren’t just a rap group you dumbasses. Listen to some of their stuff aside from the 4 or 5 songs you know. Even a song like Sabotage. What makes them different from rap is they play instruments, and they play them well to boot. How can you say it’s fine for them to play the Gorillaz but not the Beasties? I like the Gorillaz, but only up to when the guy starts rapping. Then it sucks. But then he stops, and it starts being good again.

  9. Nope – never said that I liked the Gorillaz, but I said that Alt Nation says that they play them. The problem I have is that the Gorillaz are new, or are at least putting out new music – Channel 21 keeps playing “alternative” songs from like 15 years ago by the Beastie Boys and that’s just *not* alternative music.

  10. Alright, I guess I see sorta what you mean. But you have to ask yourself if much of that stuff is really alternative anymore you know? Like the Chili Peppers, I love them to death and they used to be alternative, but Stadium Arcadium just debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200. And stuff like Fall Out Boy and Green Day get played overall more than seemingly anything anymore on any station. Still a good station and sorry for my sorta harsh tone before.

  11. heh – harsh is welcome here. No worries there.

I guess it all depends on what “alternative” is to you. Once a genre becomes a genre it can’t ever be “alternative to the norm” because it has alaready become the norm. Best two examples are the ones you’ve already mentioned: Green Day and RHCP. They ARE the norm, but because they’re new and they’ve historically been alternative, I think they’d OK to leave on Alt Nation. And I’m NOT a fan of the RHCP – the local rock stations have overplayed them too much for my liking. But even after having said that, I somehow can’t ever see how the Beasties fit into it.

I just think their program director likes’m and that’s all it takes, in radio.

  12. wow, i do know they overplay a lotta shit like the Kaiser Chiefs, or The Used (i like) but arguing about it on line…. you guys have no life.

  13. Wow, what does it say about your life if you took the time to pause, read the post, and then leave a message about other people having no life?

I feel bad – like I stole so much of your valuable time… you tosser. Go wank it somewheres else.

  14. I can’t stand Madison. Everytime a song is over and she comes on I want to punch an old lady. And her latest comment on Dave Grohl that I heard by bad timing in turning on the radio was worth beating down a whole rest home.
