Over the years I’ve written a few posts about the iPod, XPlay, and iTunes for Windows. Over the years, I’ve amassed a number of comments on these threads, with people looking for help – sometimes from other readers and other times for me (via email).
I’ve opted to close a couple of those threads and point people here: I figure it would be better to put all of the “tips” in one location, rather than having people leave pleas for help all over my blog. In fact, my nominal advice is to contact Apple for help, since it’s their product, but there were a few things that have bubbled up that can help.
If have an iPod and have Windows 98 or Windows Millennium, my initial advice is to upgrade your OS. Honestly, that’s the best advice my Geek-based self can offer… get an OS made this decade and call it good. Especially if you own an iPod now.
OK, fine, so you’re committed to sticking with Win98 or WinME, my secondary advice is to get XPlay from MediaFour. It’s an application that will enable iPod support on earlier versions of Windows. It’s what I used back in the day, before iTunes was brought over to Windows – it’s killer.
Trying to install iTunes and see an error code 1607? There’s a workaround at http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=q108340. I’m also told that it’s available on Apple’s support site.
iTunes error 9812? “Basically what I think this will do is update security certificates on your computer (which effect all Internet programs). Follow Method 3 from this Microsoft help site: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;836987”
Beyond that, check out Apple’s site. They make the iPod and they make iTunes: they should be the best source of information. If they aren’t helping you, blog about it! If they keep getting props for good products and good customer support and they aren’t helping, let the world know about it. I’ve had some good experiences with AppleCare and some bad ones: I share both because I’m sick to death of hearing about how infallible that Apple is when it’s obvious that they have good and bad days.
Frankly, I’m just annoyed that my iPod nano is so scratched up, leaving me with no recourse for replacement – that’s irresponsible on their part, especially when I didn’t get a case with mine… too early an adopter, I guess.
Anyway, this was mostly for housekeeping – hope it helps out. Again, feel free to leave comments asking for help, but I’m not going to respond to them, since I have no addition tips to offer that aren’t already here… besides, the best advice I can offer is to go ask Apple.
Hey Randy –
I’m getting that -9812 error when trying to download from iTunes, but the Microsoft page to fix the problem has expired. Any suggestions?
Beats me. I mean, I also can’t get to the knowledge base article, but it looks like it updated the Security Certificates. A quick search on MSN Search and it’s looking like the original KB addressed a problem of not being able to get to the Windows Update site that also fixed this up. I also saw a couple of suggestions to disconnect a broadband modem and let it sit for a bit, but I think that’s bunk.
Another thing to try is hitting up Windows Update for the most recent patches: anything with the Certificates shoulda been rolled up there – if you’ve done that already, ping Apple and tell them that http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301520 is out of date. They should know about that…
HI! my mum bought me a 2gb ipod nano for christmas, and when i tried to load the itunes disc that came with it on to my PC, it told me i needed windows 2000(sp) or windows xp(home edition). I have windows millenium! Is there any way for me to get itunes on my PC?
Also i would like to ask if you can load your itunes on to more than one PC, because like i said it doesnt work on my PC so i put it on my mates computer. So can i still put it on mine?
From the post above:

Hello Randy…
My husband already has a Creative Zen, and he downloads all his music from our preexisting files of songs from XP Media player. I just got a nano, and I’m wondering how I can transfer the songs from Media Player to itunes. I don’t want to download itunes yet. We like to use the Media player to play music in our computer and I’m afraid it might change into itunes…Apple website has no answer…
Depends. If all of the existing files are MP3, it’ll be OK. Both the Zen and iPod will play MP3 files without an issue. It’s when ya get protected WMA files and protected AAC files from Microsoft and Apple that you can’t put them on the opposite devices.
Having said that, you might want to take a look at Xplay version 2: rumor has it that that plugs into Windows Media Player for iPods… just an FYI.
If you’re getting one of the most commons errors, error 1607, we’ve setup a site to help collect solutions.
http://www.error1607.com
Over time we’ll add some other common install problems
I don’t know anything about computers and i’m afraid to mess anything up so i need some help.
I just recently got an iPod Nano, but i don’t kno if it’ll work for Windows 98on the box it says Windows 2000 or windows xp.plz help!!!!!!!!!
If you’ve got Windows 98, you’ll need extra software like Xplay from MediaFour – the iPod only supports Windows 2000 or Windows XP out of the box.
Your comment above, ipods will play all MP3’s no problem, if i’ve created my own MP3’s from CD can I just drop them over onto the ipod with the windows explorer or do I have to put them through itunes / xplay or some other tool. I have another basic MP3 player I just drag and drop to, is ipod this easy?
Any MP3 file can go to an iPod, but you can’t just drag it over: you need to have it in the iTunes Library, install Xplay (which support drag and drop via Explorer) or some other utility… otherwise the iPod won’t have the MP3 file in it’s music database.
Help!! My sister and I both have ipods, but only one computer with usb ports.
I cant seem to find a way to have itunes recognize both ipods.
Anything I can do about that?
That’s an odd one. Apple should have a write up on that somewhere in their knowledge base: you can’t be the only people trying to do this!
For what it’s worth, my video iPod and iPod nano are both seen by the same PC with iTunes, but I’ve never plugged them in at the same time. iTunes even goes so far as to change the iPod icon in the library to be whatever model I have plugged in: it knows my nano is black and my iPod is white.
At least the most current version – are y’all running 6.x?
Alright, so I guess I was just in too much of a rush this morning, because I plugged it in a couple minutes ago and it worked perfectly fine.
Sorry to bother you, and thanks for the help
No worries!
random error, each time iopen itunes it says “iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.” it gettign annoying. i want some videos on my ipod.

Has anyone figured out the 9812 error? I have disabled the virus software, turned off modem, and then back on. I’m still getting this error message when trying to buy off the music store. I can transfer music that was already on my PC.
HELP!
when loading itunes get error message quicktime not loaded. when i go to itunes to download quicktime halfway thru the load an error code comes up quicktime installation failed error code-3. anyone have a clue? thanks
Hello,
I just bought the new Ben Harper cd, which is copy controlled. Now, I’ve had other copy controlled cds in the past, but this one seems different. For some reason it wont load up like normal cds do in iTunes, and when I try to drag them over manually, it says there protected and it can’t use them. So my question is, is there any way to fix this? I have windows XP home edition, if that helps. Thank you.
I just go an ipod from my friend, and he lost his installation cd. Is there any way to get the ipod hooked up to my computer w/out the cd?
Ya: use the iPod Software thingy and iTunes from Apple.com
Hey. By an accident i tried to uninstall a program named “QuickTime for Windows”. Never used it, and thought it was something els than the QuickTime 7.x. But it occured to me that it wasn’t. When i tried to open iTunes, it says that no QuickTime is installed. Okay, i thought, and uninstalled iTunes, and the other QuickTime i had on my computer, then downloaded the latets iTunes+QuickTime from apple.com, but when it starts to install QuickTime it gives me an error. “Error Code: -3”. I’ve checked the website for help, searched their archive for “Error Code: -3”, but nothing comes up.
Got any idea how i can fix it?
I’d start at the source: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/win.html – they should have a troubleshooting help thing up there somewhere…
Thank you Randy about the tip on Xplay. Now I can use that on my Win Me to transfer music to my newly purchased iPod Nano. So Thank you Randy
I have tried to get my iPod installed on my Windows 98 computer and have failed numerous times. What should I do?
I would start by reading the bold text in the post above. :)
I have the EXACT same problem as Christian, but your answer to him doesnt help me at all. i’ve tried everything randy!
installing quicktime standalone
installing and uninstalling iTunes
installing from apple.com and quicktime.com
still, my computer just DOES NOT want to install quicktime!now i cant use itunes and i’ve only had it working for me a week! its been two months since my problem started. i NEED my iTunes back! please help me!
IF YOU HAVE error code -3, HERES YOUR SOLUTION!
I FIXED MY PROBLEM! christian, if u want to fix your problem, go to apple.com and post a topic that outlines your problem. you can ALSO read my topic (by perujuan14) so that you too can once again use iTunes! just go to apple’s support page. then, click on discussions. my topic is under iTunes, part of the iLife category. GOOD LUCk!
I am using Windows Millenium Edition can i just transfer mp3’s from files on my computer onto an ipod nano without using itunes?
Nope.
please help i am using windows xp and i used to be able to load music to my ipod but latly my pc and ipod updater will detect the ipod but itunes wont. i have sercherd through apple suport many times ans they are no help.
someone plz help
please help, i friend recently cleaned up ,y computer and ever since i have no longer been able to access itunes music store. it just comes up with cannot connec as the network connection was refused. its driving me mad any suggestions?
I’m thinking about getting an iPod but I only have Windows 98. Can I still use my iPod and download iTunes?
Not without another application like Xplay.
My sister bought a 4gb iPod nano in March at the same time I bought an iPod video. My iPod still works fine, but hers will not even turn on. I have no idea if she did something to it or not, but she has asked me to fix it, and I have no idea where to start. When I plug the nano into the computer, the charging icon does not even turn on, and itunes does not recognize that an iPod is plugged in. However, when I hold the iPod up to my ear, I can hear a high-pitched buzz. Has anyone else had this problem before?
Help–my iTunes will not let me burn an entire audio CD. After a certain track, it says that iTunes is cancelling the burn process and says there is an unknown error. I can hear all of the songs up to that point without a problem. I am using 40x, 700MB, 80min, Music CD-Rs. Any ideas?
Yeah, im stuck. I try to run itunes but the same message keeps coming up: iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Thats all it says. Ive uninstalled and reinstalled it twice, but it wont work. any ideas?
and i cant find any help at apple. this sucks
im having the same problem as hayley ~ i open up itunes and try to go into either the music store or pdocast section for some new stuff, and while it loads the music store, it unexpectedly closes itunes without prompting or anything…it doesnt come up with an error after it closes either, its like something in the program is closing it like its made to close…its really pissing me off! how do i fix it????
hey randy—
please help me…
look when i try to install itunes it says that “some installation files are corrupt. please download a fresh copy and reinstall.” ive tried evrything but it doesnt work. can u please get back at me at my email address please. thank u so much.
Um. I’d contact Apple – they should be able to help…
I have uninstalled itunes but every now and then I get an install message telling me to insert the disk itunes is on.
I have searched my comp for any Itunes files but found nothing.
do you know why this is happening?
Hey, i have lost my cd that came w/ my ipod, what is the ipod software thingy that you were talking about in an earlier post?
i was unable to dL itunes, and it wasn’t until i found this site that i realized that i couldn’t b/c i have a pc.
so then i tried to dL xplay.
i still can’t get any of it installed.
ok i JUSt got an Ipod 30gb video and i have a windows ME and i cant download software nor itunes is there any way to get music from say i dont know my downloads to ipod….?
i bought a new ipod and it doesnt come with software i had to download itunes 7 and wehn it finished it wouldnt run because it was an unknown publisher and it wasnt a valid win32 application. what do i do?
I have the same problem as Hateshispc, I can’t get music on to my iPod becuase I have crappy ME.
Solutions, anyone?
This is a little off topic, but is Vista supposed to be any good?
I’m gonna get it right when it comes out. I’m so freakin’ sick of ME I could just toss it out the window.
I think Vista will be worth the upgrade but the problem for will be that of machine “support”. If your box is running WinMe, it’s questionable that Windows 2000 or Windows XP would run well on it – Windows Me was relatively lightweight in requirements compared what Windows XP required… and even if it will Vista, most of the cool stuff in there needs some oomph. Almost any modern machine – as in bought in the last year or two – would be a good starting point.
Just an FYI.
im having the EXACT same problem as travis… i tried to download itunes 7 and i DO have XP… and it said that… and i quote! “……. is not a valid win32 application….”
please help me! i have a $50 card i’d really like to use… like right now…
thank you!!!
I’d ping Apple – they should be able to help more than I could… although if I had to guess, I’d say the download didn’t finish properly or something.
Windows Millennium Edition was released in 2001. That IS “made this decade”! Windows Me came out AFTER Windows 2000. Anyway, you can buy other software but even then you still can’t download from the iTunes Store with Windows 98 Second Edition or Windows Me. And xPlay does not work with the first edition of Windows 98 or Windows 95.
“not a valid win32 application” Are you sure you didn’t download the Mac version of iTunes instead of the Windows version?
Windows Vista is Windows NT 6.0
Windows XP is Windows NT 5.1
Windows 2000 is Windows NT 5.0
A Windows Me PC would probably run XP OK but Vista is a big jump and it’s not even coming out until January 2007 (that is the plan as of now). If you want to upgrade I would recommend Windows XP now. Windows 2000 would run even faster no doubt but that is no longer being sold by Microsoft. Plus there’s other software that requires XP now and there will probably be future upgrades of iTunes that will no longer work with Win2000. Upgrading a Windows 98 PC is even more likely to be slow using Windows XP if it even meets the minimum requirements. It may be cheaper to buy a new computer with XP installed.
First, let me point out that the problem these people are having are caused by Apple, NOT Microsoft. That Apple decided to support Windows XP (and possibly 2000) was their decision. Considering that every Windows PC sold since late 2001 has included XP, I think this was a sound business decision: you’ve got people buying “bleed edge” technology in their MP3 player yet they expect to run it on a 6+ year old PC? That’s like buying a Ferrari and wanting it to run on leaded gasoline.
FWIW, Windows Me was released Sept 14, 2000 – technically last decade but certainly, it was a long, LONG time ago. Further, Microsoft discontinued support for the 9x family as of July 11, 2006 – again in car terms, it would be like going to a local Ford dealer and expecting them to support a 1948 Edsel.
when i click to open itunes instead of opening it pops up with a little message that says “itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. we are sorry for the inconvenience” i tryed reinstalling about 4 times and it wont work do u know how to fix it??
CAN SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE I FOR THE LAST TWO DAYS EVRY TIME I OPEN MY ITUNES I HAVE BEEN GETTING THIS WEIRD MESSAGE THAT SAYS “ITUNES HAS ENCOUNTERED AN ERROR AND NEEDS TO CLOSE ,WE ARE SORRY FOR THE INCONVIENCE”.
i got my ipod 30 gb from a friend, whithout the instalation cd, and with itunes i cant put any game and video, i believe is because i havent installed the cd, itunes doesnt help with that. How can i get the cd…
Download iTunes 7: it will have the connection software built into it.
I have the same problem when I open Itunes. The computer says,”Updating Itunes library”
then…”Itunes.exe has generated errors and will be closed by windows. You will need to restart the program.”
“An error log is being created”
So, I still can’t open Itunes on my Windows 2000 system.
Dan
We just got a MP3 player for my daughter, it is letting us drap and drop songs, but then when you try to play them, they say NOT AUTHORIZED? Is this some sort or write protect? If we purchased the songs, why would we be able to use them?
Any help Appreciated!

hi…opened itunes this am..everything was gone. i was able to get my library back but can’t figure out how to get my own playlists back. 8300 songs arealot of playlists…plz help
Hi all,
In case no one has tried it yet CCleaner is a good program to use, since it is properly named Crap Cleaner. Basically uninstall/delete everything related to quick times and itunes (minus play lists, music and the like; back those up!). Restart and run CCleaner, (any registry/crap cleaner is good to use, but I only recommend this because it is free and very thorough). Be sure CCleaner backs up your registry then scan and clean.
Restart the computer and try a fresh install of version 6.0 of iTunes as that one appears to be the least buggy of the recent releases although I have heard 5.0x is also good. It should be packed with QuickTime already so need for a separate download. All this should work for the Windows XP and 2000 systems.
Hope it works and remember, BACKUP. Problems sometimes happen and you don’t want your music or other files lost.
helllppp. yeah so im getting the whole error thing about a not valid win32 application & its making me mad :[ what do i dooo.
um, hey!
i just bought a 80GB ipod video and i have a windows 98 computer. so when i tried to download iTunes it said that there was a problem. i read your other thread about someone who had the same problem and i went to:
mediafour.com
but where can i download something like iTunes there?
do i have to buy it?
HELP!!
Well, to be blunt, not only have you flubbed the purchase (by not checking minimum requirements) you didn’t even read the blog post that you’ve commented on. Scroll up to the top of this post and read the text that’s in bold – it’s got the answer you’re looking for, complete with links and who you need to give money to to get it working. Be adviced though that you will *not* be able to get music from the iTunes store – XPlay only helps with sync’ing.
i hate my ipod for not working. its never going to work. and i hope all ipods die.
ive just got a iPOD shuffle for christmas and i cannot download itunes to my computer cause it says i need XP or above can you help?
well just download xplay and use it to transfer and download songs into there and then transfer them to your ipod…or else just upgrade your OS(operating system to XP)

what is the deal with downloading itunes 7 and it “not a valid win32 application” when trying to install it?
I bought a iPod Nano 4GB. I now see that the iTunes in not compatible with my Windows 98SE. I also think that my USB ports are not 2.0. I tried Yamipod, but when i connected the ipod, it didnt recognize it. Please help. A free version of somthing would be great.
I just got an iPOD shuffle and downloading itunes says all my files are not “win32” applications. how do i fix this???
Im having the same blasted NOT A VALID WIN32 APPLICATION message when I try to download iTunes 7. HELP!!!

randy… i got my iPod nano today and i really wanna use it when i go somewhere next week but i download iTunes 7 and it says teh same thing. “not a valid win32 appklication” PLEASE HELP US ALL!!!
hi,
i just got a 30GB ipod video for christmas and i already have itunes but its not updated..so i updated it to itunes 7.2 i think..anyway uh it says that its not a valid Win32 application and it says the publisher is unknown..uhh what should i do?? cuz im getting really pissed off and all i wanna do is use my new ipod!
Well, I’m not sure just what’s going on with iTunes. After all, I don’t even work for Apple :)
The first question I have to as is are you selecting “Windows” downloading the bits? If you’re not, and it’s accidentally defaulting to OSX on the download, then this would all make sense.
I just went and downloaded it again: it seems to start fine. Having said that, Apple could have fixed something – you [all] should try to download it again.
Of course this also assume that you’re all running Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Vista. If you’re on a Windows 98 or Windows Me box, iTunes won’t work for you: see the bold section of text above.
thanks i’ll try that.
much appricated x
Hi there,
Wonder if you could help. Used to have 900 songs for my ipod mini but pc crashed and had to get another pc – could I possibly load all my songs on my ipod onto my new pc without wiping my ipod clean?
Thanks if you can help.
everytime i plug my ipod in to update it says that 134 songs cant be copied onto the ipod because they “arent authorized to be played on the computer” the songs were on my ipod before and the songs play fine from my computer they just dont show up on the ipod? helppppppppp
Regarding the error “not a valid win32 application”. I have just fixed this error for a neighbour. They had downloaded the setup program via a dialup connection and the file had obviously got corrupted. I downloaded the setup exe myself using a broadband connection and put it on their computer- it worked first time.
I also have the win32 error when trying to install itunes. I read somewhere online in my quest to fix this problem that I needed windows XP with service pack 2, so I updated that and downloaded itunes once again. However, to my dismay, the win32 devil appeared again. I am really at a dead end and do not know what to do now. Any and all help would be appreciated.
Hey my brother gave me his ipod for christmas which is v.1.3 and formatted for mac, i gave my ipod nano away which was formatted for my windows computer. I’ve tried hooking up his ipod to my windows computer but (as expected) i had to format his ipod for windows. I have been trying to go to the updater thing and clicking restore, but it wont work, can you help?
do you have to have itunes to charge your ipod on the computer or dus it just charge when u plug it in?
win 32 devil not responsive to correct downloading procedure; have xp, itunes 6 runs fine, anyone have any advise as to how to fix?
win32 problem like evryone else. just thought id sign the petition on how gay ipods r
i googled this problem further and apparently evryone with aol dialup is having this problem. i happen to have aol dialup too. what a coincidence
So I’d guess that makes AOL gay, rather than iPods?
Besides, this isn’t so much a petition as it is a collection of posts – I mean, I’m certainly not collecting signatures or have an “in” with Apple to help out – I’m just a blog writer :)
Like everyone says…My Itunes wont work The Nano didnt come with a cd i tryed downloading the newest Itunes and and windows Installer thing pops up saying the installation package could nbot be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows Installer package. also i have AOHELL Dial-up and windows xp HELP?…Please

Hey Randay, thanks for all the help you’ve provided people with over the past year
I recently got an iPod video, and of course I’m a Windows ME user so I cannot use iTunes, I have access to it at a friend’s, but I’d rather do it here, plus I don’t wish to lose my thousands of songs just because of the following issue
I used the Winamp plugin to fill my iPod with it’s music, and I’ve searched everywhere on the internet for software which can sync movies to the iPod, not convert it to M4A, because I’ve done that
I can’t find anything, And there’s no use for an iPod video if you can’t even put videos on it. Any ideas?
Hm. Well I know you can use applications like Nero Recode to re-code a movie into 320×240 MP4, but I’m 99% certain that it won’t work on Me. You could try something else like Any Video Convert (http://www.any-dvd-converter.com/) but I dunno if that works with Me either. And it also depends on what form the video are in too… Video’s a beast because you’ll find that it takes time for trial and error.
And after all of that, I don’t even know if XPlay will allow transfer of video :)
thanks for the help :|
thanks for the help :|
Eh? I mean this isn’t Apple Tech Support – Apple.com is the best place for Apple Tech Support. Besides, if I remember correctly your iPod’s battery died… that’s hardware. How in the heck could we – or I – help with that?
Jeesh.
I just got a new ipod and installed iTunes on my computer. When I try to connect to the itunes store I receive the following message:
“itunes could not connect to the itunes store. the network connection was refused”
Thanks for the Help
arter i have fully installed the itunes program i will go to click on it and a error will come up saying itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close.we are sorry for the inconvenience. I did not reconize this error so i clicked on details it states, this error includes: information regarding the condition of the itunes when the problem occured the operating system verison and computer hardware in use; your digital productID,wich could be used to identify your license; and the internet protocol{IP} address of your computer.
Sup Randy!
I’ve had my ipod Nano for about a year now, and I have never experienced a problem. Until two weeks ago when an error came up similiar to this,
“Itunes cannot connect to the Itunes store. The network connection was refused.”
I visited the Apple website and googled this and couldn’t find an answer to my problem. If you can, could you try to find out what’s wrong with my Itunes?
It would be a big help!
Thanks!
Call Apple. :)
well when I try to open itunes it says: the program has a “win32 application error”
why does this happen. I cant even sync pics or musix since I bought my ipod 30gb
I’ve been using i-tunes for nearly a year now with no problems.
However, I recently up graded to the newest version; and now when I rip an MP3 disk all the songs are in different folders on the disk. The result being, for example, that when I put a new disk into my car player I can not play randomly through all the songs on the disk. Instead I have to forward through each folder, and can only play randomly in that, or each, individual folder.
Is there a way to change this within i-tunes?
I’ve looked through i-tunes and attempted to get help through apple. However, no luck yet.
Thanks for any insight you can provide
Hi, I was given an ipod shuffle for my bday in November, i have tried to install itunes to my parents computer and it just wouldn’t work… I have now brought a new computer, Windows XP all the min requirements, each time i install it, i reset it as i am supposed to, when the computer turns on i can open itunes and evrything, can download songs all of that, but if i exit itunes, the next time i want to get into it, it comes up with an error saying that not all the files were installed and i need to reinstall it… i have lost everything. i have tried reinstalling it a number of times and still no change… Can someone please help, i am sick of having an ipod with no songs on it…
iTunes.exe has generated an error?
I searched the web and could not find the specific steps to overcome this problem and so I synthesized the thoughts expressed in a variety of threads. The following procedure worked on my machine. The problems on my machine resulted from prior installations of Quicktime. iTunes will not run if Quicktime fails.
The intention is to remove all iTunes and Quicktime software references. The following steps remove the software traces and worked on my machine.
1. Using add/remove programs uninstall Quicktime (click on Start –> Settings –> Control Panel –> Add/Remove Programs)
2. Using add/remove programs uninstall iTunes
3. Right click on My Computer, use Search and remove all programs named Quicktime
4. Right click on My Computer, use Search and remove all programs named iTunes (except your iTunes download, so you won’t have to sit through another long download session).
5. Left click on Start, click Run, type “regedit”, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, click on SOFTWARE, and remove the Apple Programs folder (you may want to check in case you have other Apple applications, but all I had were iTunes and Quicktime in my Apple folder).
Steps 1 through 5 should remove all traces of the software and now you can install iTunes.
Good Luck

Now with the release of iTunes 7.1.0.59 and Xplay 2.3.1 it’s broke again…
CAN I PUT MUSIC ON MY IPOD NAN 4GB FROM ANOTHER MUSIC PLAYED BESIDES ITUNES??
SO DO U KNOW N E WEBSITE THAT HAS ITUNE FOR Windows Millennium Edition??
@Bobby – read the post mate: it’s got lots of info.
I don’t have the time to read through all the messages about ITunes reluctance to connect to ITunes Store, but I know from having spend a good deal of this Sunday searching through the Internet that many of you may be experiencing this annoying, inexplicable problem.
Well, if your case is like mine, the cause of your problem may be the auto-update of Windows. After update, Internet Explorer’s connection configuration was changed to connect via proxy __ in my network there’s no proxy. That explained why I was being capable of connecting to ITunes Store via dial-up but never via ADSL.
In my case I took very long to detect the problem because IE is not my default webrowser, i.e., navigation by Firefox was normal, but by IE was not.
I am relieved. Good luck.

Hello, i ran across your post on https://www.randyrants.com/2006/01/troubleshooting/. I had the same problem and this is how i fixed it.
Parameters of problem: Win XP (home/Pro), Itunes1.1.XX, Quicktime and Itunes are installed
When trying to run itunes you get the “Itunes has encountered an error and has to close”….blah blah blah….
Here is what i did and my stuff is running again like it should…….PLEASE follow in step (Process e is important)
1. Download most recent version of the Itunes+quicktime
2. Disable any anti-viral programs and spyware (windows defender)
****Noe: Itunes depends on quicktime so we are more or less chopping off the legs before we get to the head
3. Go to Start->Run->regedit
4. Go to HKEY_LOACL_MACHINE->Apple Computer , Inc and delete the folders for itunes and quicktime
5. Uninstall quick time and itunes from the add/remove programs manager
6. Go to Start->C: (Right mouse click and go to search)
a. Search for this only by All files and folder “quicktime”
I. Delete everything that shows up
b. Search for this only by all files and folders “itunes”
I. Delete everything that shows up
7. Reboot your system (take note of any errors that come up)….I did not encounter any (hope you don’t either)
8. re-install the itunes+quicktime and run itunes
I hope this helps you out a little and messing with the registry can be scary but i got mad and didn’t care anymore…….So as a result i went through my system and ran all the programs and i did not encounter any errors. If this works for you please pass it along to help others. There is no help from Apple on this.
randy, i really need ur help. my ipod was working gr8t, until i left it in it’s box for about a month without using it. when i tried to switch it on, it wont work. when i plug it in the comp, it still dosnt work. i dont even hear a high – pitched buzz. is it because the battery is too low? pls help. im really REALLY worried.
need help . ipod wont switch on .no buzzing.no show-up even if i plug it in the comp. pls. help.
Try http://www.apple.com/ – they should have information that can help.
hi randy
i got an iPod mini just after christmas. an itunes cd came with it. the itunes cd wont install. it says that i need “2000 or XP”. i saw your posts that said i should get xplay, so i went there and downloaded the free trial. after it downloaded, when i went to install it, it said “preparing to install” then it stopped. a msg came up that said “xplay requires microsoft windows me, 98se, 200 or xp” i only have the first windows 98.what do i do(without having to contact xplay or apple)
You either upgrade to Windows 98SE (or Windows Me) or you don’t use XPlay.
Not to be glib, but I’m not sure what you’d expect me to say… Considering that iTunes requires Windows 2000, XP, 2003 or Vista, which is a VERY forgiving requiredment: it’s asking that you have an OS from the last 8 years – since the iPod line is only 5 years old, that’s not bad. Then there’s mention of a third party app which expects Windows 98SE or Millennium… either OS from from the last 10 years, give or take…
I’d say you need a new PC to go with that iPod mini – don’t bother getting a shuffle or nano either: they all use iTunes. :)
Oh, and then I gotta ask the obvious. Why on earth wouldn’t you want to contact the people that make the two products you are having trouble with?!
Apple may keep a list of people in your situation and can offer direction even if it’s an OS they say they know nothing about. MediaFour – who makes XPlay – should be able to tell you what you need or what you’re missing.
I just don’t understand why you WOULDN’T want to contact them…
I hav that damn “win32 application problem. I rang up apple and they said its because of the browser in my case ‘aol’. a way to fix it is to get itunes on a different computer get them to burn it and install it into your computer or use interenet explorer not aol to download itunes.
I have an iPod nano, and I used to have iTunes and Quicktime installed on my computer. But I came home one day and my Mum had uninstalled Quicktime and iTunes wouldn’t run without it. Without thinking, I uninstalled iTunes and now whenever I try to re-install iTunes or Quicktime, I’ll click on ‘download’ the internet will take a few minutes and then a new page will load saying “Thank you for installing/downloading…” But the download window never opened!
i accidently lost the cd that came with my video ipod and the itunes on the computer i am using says something is wrong with audio configuration, so i tried using my other computer, it already has itunes but my ipod isnt on that itunes, so it says i need to put in the disc that came with it, i was wondering if it is possible to download it on apple or anywhere else?
I recently transferred my Limewire music to my iTunes library. But now they won’t load onto my iPod. I get an error saying it can’t recognize the file type or source or something…it has also placed a white explanation point in a grey circle next to all my limewire songs. Please help.
My daughter bought an ipod. She already had itunes loaded and it worked fine for her brother. It was v6.x. Now we try to downloan the new 7.1. It downloans, but won’t install. I have been on tech support with MS for 7 hours and Apple for 3 hours. No one can figure it out. When I click on the itunes setup.exe icon on the desktop, I get the message, “unknow publisher”, Do you want to run anyway? I click on run and nothing happens. The box disappears and I return to the desktop. My daughter has talked to 3 other people who have the same problem, yet neither MS nor Apple will admit to an increase in calls for this problem. Any ideas? We have done all the basics like removing old versions and 3rd party software. Even put in new registry files in case the old ones were corrupt.
No idea. I will say this: stay on Apple about this. Apple wrote the software that’s having trouble so it’s Apple’s responsibility to fix the broken software. Unless they can find a patch, SP, or Windows defect that has changed since they shipped the latest rev of iTunes, there’s no way that it’s Microsoft’s fault (no matter how many times Apple tries to redirect blame there). If there WAS a new Windows Update that suddenly breaks iTunes on a mass scale, there would be more news about it on a whole lotta blogs.
If I had to guess you’ve hit a strange combination that is causing the errors OR Apple didn’t sign their EXE properly. I would give iTunes another download today (or in a couple of days) and see what happens… also verify that the entire download comes down in one chunk (that the size of the download matches what Apple says you should expect) – other people on this post have had issues with crappy ISP’s dropping chunks of data on download.
IMHO, no matter how solid or secure the OS, if an application does something wrong to screw itself it’s not the OS’s fault. It’s like having a calculator, telling it to divide by 0, watching it error out and then complaining that the calculator doesn’t work right… at least that’s how I see it.
hey. ive got an iPod shuffle 2nd gen. when i turn it on and press play the light flashes orange and green then turns off on me. its been charging for ages. Can anyone help? if so i will be very grateful. from david. Write back
my itunes updated to 7.2 and now it won’t play due to an audio configuration problem. How do I fix this?

HELP ME!
hi. my name is dee. i have itunes..i dont really know which version it is..but i have had it for a while now. alomost every time i open itunes it asks me to install the new version. ok, cool..i want to install the new version. but i dont want my 1567 songs to be deleted. also, i HAVE to have the new version because my ipod nano WILL NOT sync with my itunes. i dont know if this is because i have an old version, or if it is because i have used my ipod on a different computer that had the new version. when i try to plug my ipod into my computer..it says that i need the new version. i know that my brother has used his shuffle on here before. so, my question is..can i install the new version of itunes without deleting all of my songs? thanks. ~dee
Hi,
I have read through all the comments, BUT can anyone please tell me how to get my itunes library back. I have spoken to itunes, microsoft, and the manufacturers of my laptop, all no help at all…. Itunes worked fine until the last update, NOW whenever I click to open it tells me of an error and has to be closed, and to send the eror report to microsoft. I have installed and uninstalled so many times. The last report showed that itune was being used and all applications were to be closed, the only application that was shown was…aol??. Which I closed to no avail.I have done everything you can think of, even tried to download an older version, but that didn’t work. Also if I click on to quicktime player it says I must have windows 2000, I am using XP but not Vista.
Help someone please I have 1100 songs and I can’t add anymore…
Also my computer won’t let me perform a system restore, as I thought maybe I could go back to using the previous version of itunes.
Thanks in advance.

I have a copy of iTunes on my very servicable w2k laptop. everything about this computer works just fine, including itunes and my ipod.
The problem is this – if i want to purchase any more music i am obliged to upgrade to the latest itunes – which I am quite happy to do – but I am notified that this version will only work on XP and above. I really can’t afford to change my computer just so that I can download $5 worth of music.
Any ideas/comments/suggestions?
Hey uh… I have been trying to download itunes for the last three months “seriously” I have a dial up connection through juno and evertime i try to do this the internet kicks off. HELP ASAP
Uh, I would invest in broadband. Or finding a friend with broadband, a blank CD, and disc burner. :)
I’m mad. I bought an iTunes giftcard last night and since I redeemed it and everything there’s not returning it. I have the next best version of iTunes and when I try to buy a song it says I have to upgrade. Well I did the whole 4 hour installing process and when I try to run it it says “File is not a Win32 application”.
The whole thing is dowloaded, I dont have to do that process again, it just wont let me run it. I paid $25 for that card and I want to use it!
I’d yell at Apple about it.
I am trying to download itunes 7.0. I have dialup
connection. I tried to go to quicktime player but
the page won’t pop up. If any suggustions send me a e-mail at kitty28142@netzero.com. I thank you for any suggustions. Thanks.
I was always a Mac user, so iTunes seemed effortless. Now I have a new PC with VISTA and find that in itself, is a VERY unpleasant experience full of frustration! But as for iTunes, I installed a recent version of it for Vista and wanted to manage my 15,000 songs and 5,000 photos. Alas, even with maxing out on my memory board installs, I lack enough room on my C drive for it all. Can I use my old external hard drive with Vista? Ohh noooooo, so I buy an 80G personal pocket media drive from Hp which is Vista compatable. Well I guess I didn’t do the transfer/library consolidation just right so I now have my library on my laptop and all the actual mp3 files on the pocket drive. Though I have requested via preferences to find my iTunes folders on my pocket drive, when I try to activate a song, I keep getting the message that the original file can not be found. When it asks me if I want to find it, I can indeed tell it where to find the file, but only for each and every individual file. I do not want to have to have to go through the process of “finding” my song files 13,000 times (at 6 key strokes each time!) why can’t I direct my laptop to look for all music files all at once like a simple redirect? Why doesn’t my new “preference” file path take care of this? Is there no other way to get my PC to look and find everything it needs on my media drive? Everything was so easy with my Mac, I feel like some programmer from Mars is having a good laugh at my expense.
Thanks for any help you can give.
Um, dude? You’d have these exact same problems with a Mac and an external drive, so don’t try to blame a PC. Blame iTunes since the PC can see the HDD with no problem – if iTunes can’t figure out where to go for music, blame iTunes.
What I would do at this point is remove all of the items from the iTunes Library (don’t let it remove the files, just the iTunes Library entries), make sure all of the music is where you want it to be (internal or external drives), and then add all of your music back.
hey…okay so i just bought the 16gb i-pod touch and i have windows xp i tried to download i-tunes and it says i first have to have qick time player to download it . well i used to have it but then i removed it from my computer and now when i try to download quick time it doesnt allow me telling me it incounterd some problems or something like that and ive tried for many days to down load it .. and i was just wondering if there was any other way to put music onto my ipod without using downloading itunes
For an iPod classic or nano, I would say XPlay from MediaFour. For the iPhone or iPod touch, I have no idea – there’s a lot of different things going on in the touch and iPhone (i.e. even the radio-wire doesn’t work with it) so I’d check the MediaFour web site to see if it’s compatible.
If not, I’d stick to iTunes.
Hi, I was downloading a movie on itunes but before it was done downloading i accidently exited out of itunes. My money is still down from when i bought it but the movie isn’t there.
ISSUES GALORE- I just bought the ipod touch and when I tried downloading and installing itunes 7.6.1.9 which is what they tell you that you need… everything goes smoothly until I try to open the darn program and I get nothing… although it is listed in the running processes, I have no application open and running. I’ve tried every from uninstall and reinstall to trying to add keys to the registry that weren’t there. NOTHING.. please help!
Angie, – me too… no Itunes 7629 now, but same thing… EventViewer says a Registry not exist, for the IPOD SERVICE.
i had this problem! i deleted i tunes and then installed it again and it works fine
I am having the same problem as Julie. A pop-up said that it would continue downloading after i returned to itunes and my downloads didn’t continue to download. HELP PLEASE!

hi, my itunes 8 shows an eror while copying a converted movies or files more then 2hrs of time.
I have a problem with my itunes. It sometimes can take up to 10 minutes after downloading the song to transfer it to the library and there are times when i exit out of itunes before it makes the transfer. It says it will just continue when i sign back in but then i come back and they are deleted. i have tried to re-purchase the songs and then it says they are already purchased so it says says to check for available purchases but it then says they are all down. I cant find the songs i have paid for in the library or the purchased folder. where are they and how can i get them without wasting money by paying again for the same song or cd?
