GeekStuff for a razor? Yeah, it’s got a battery, so pftftft.
Well, it can have a battery, as they have two models this go around, much like there’s a Mach 3T and a Mach 3Power… Since I’ve been using the Mach 3Power thingy since it came out, I went with the battery based Fusion. Five blades… I figured that would be overkill, but each blade on the Fusion is much smaller than the blades on the Mach 3 line, so it’s not that extravagant like I thought the Schick Quattro was. And to combat goatee and sideburn errors they put a single blade on the flip side of the razor head: the thought is you can use the single blade for touch ups.
What I think of it?
I thought it was OK. The downside of the smaller blades is that the hair and shaving cream can clog it much faster than it would on the Mach 3. For me, that might be a problem: I have very coarse hair (and a lot of it on my face) and I tend to use a lot of shaving cream. I also thought that it wasn’t shaving all that close on the tender side of my neck, but that coulda been a bad shaving day.
I’m also sorta unimpressed with the extra single blade. One of the few gripes I had with the Mach 3, and the Sensor before that, was that of goatee maintenance. Two, three, and five blades are fine and dandy but when you have to edge a goatee, it’s dangerous. More times than I like to remember have I had to grow in a semi-full beard for a week, to fill in a patch or two. Better than lopping off an ear, sure, but still a pain in the ass. So hearing that they had the single blade, I said “COOL!” but I think my hair is too coarse for the single blade! I left a small border stretch around my goatee and tried to come in close with the single blade… ow. And it didn’t cut it very close at all… I then went at the thing with the proper side of the razor and did OK with it. I might keep the Mach 3 around just for trimming purposes though… we’ll see.
I mean, I’ve only used it once – this is a first impressions recap! – and I’ll give it most of the week before I chuck it in the drawer or not… The biggest downside of it so far is that it only comes with one razer head and I’ve yet to see (or price out) the refills.
And God knows the price of the refills will probably be be more painful than the single blade on the goatee…
Don’t forget to cover up that spot that never grows in. (eeew)
The refills are expensive. There are is a quantitative difference between the Fusion Power and non-Power blades, though: the teflon coating on the Fusion Power blades is incredibly thin, supposedly resulting in a smoother shave.
I’ve been trying the razor, too, and it feels different from the Mach3 Power, but I didn’t get any cuts or razor burn from the first use, so I intend to stick with it for a while.
Oh, yeah, the price of refills? QFC had an 8-pack of the Fusion Power refills for $29.99 ($27.99 if you have a QFC Advantage card). That’s pretty darned steep.
You leave my spot alone ;)
Yeah, I mean I remember when the original Sensor hit… the blades were $3 more per 10 pack. Back when they came in 5/10 packs. The Mach3 went up $2 but switched to 4/8 packs. Power went up another $4 for the 8 pack, but I think that included a battery. I expected an increase but jeesh!
This thing is ridiculous. I can’t bring this horrible machine anywhere under my nose without cutting deeply into my lip. I’ve tried both the ‘precision’ side and the 5 bladed monstrous shaving head of death and destruction; both tear my lip open equally well. I wake up at nights in a cold sweat wondering what the vibrating model would do to my otherwise perfect face.
