Fashion Statement or Intelligence Challenged?

I can’t tell if it’s a fashion trend or not, but even if it is a proper trend, I don’t think it’s gotten to the west coast yet. Could be an east coast only thing, actually. Either way, I still don’t get.

More specifically, it’s a hat thing. A while ago the trucker hat – circa 1970 – made a return to the fashion scene. If hats can be considered fashion. I dunno. I’m a Geek: I shouldn’t know. And for other Geeks out there, the trucker hat is the funky looking hat that you once wore in Little League: it’s got the mesh webbing over two thirds of the hat, guaranteeing a cold head in the winter and “remarkable heat escaping technology” for the summer. Personally, I think they look like ass, but I’m biased: I believe that anything relating to fashion from the 70’s should never return.

Anyway, they came back and a bunch of people wear them. I have an Xbox Live on that I’ve yet to put on. Can’t bring myself to do it.

Meanwhile, back on the east coast – um. I’m typing this in a Connecticut airport so I guess it should be “while on the east coast” – there’s been a new trend in action. It’s a two part change to the hat, and it seems to only apply to fitted hats. That rules out the trucker hat right off the bat, since those are always one size-fits-all. The first noticeable change is that people have stopped rolling the brim of the hat. I can’t even begin to guess why. Honest. I have hats going back to before the [NY] Rangers winning the Cup in ’94 that are just getting broken in properly. No good, at least not anymore.

Gotta have a completely flat brim on the hat, sticking out like Donald’s bill.

So that’s the first thing… walk around like a duck. Errr, OK? I guess. Meh.

Add to that the next change: leave the size sticker on it. I can’t tell if this applies to all fitted, non-rolled, duck-billed hats, or just New Era hats. It could just be a New Era thing… showing off the brand name, like Levi’s does with their red tab off the pocket, but it’s definitely a sticker. In fact, it’s definitely the size sticker – I’ve pulled off at least a dozen over the years. As a side note, I can even recall the hysterics of my sister, caused by a left-on size sticker on my jeans… it survived the first wash and was on my left leg the entire day. Well, until she caused a scene. I pulled it off then.

I presume that it could be for bragging rights or something. Like I have a big head, graar! I do know that I’ve never seen a woman wear a hat like this. Of course, they’re probably too preoccupied by trying to figure out how to show off more tit without exposing a nipple and trying to maintain that it’s not a trashy look. I can only guess at that. Either way, it’s not just one kid that I’ve seen with it. It’s been dozens of them. Whoop, one just walked by now – a Yankees hat, white on white with a big ol’ sticker. He’s a 7 1/4… I dunno if that’s a big head or not…

Whoa! Maybe that’s why just guys are wearing it! Maybe they think women won’t know hat sizes and they hope that they’ll think it’s a declaration of penis length!

No clue here – I’m still waiting until 2015, to see if kids start wearing their pants inside out, like they did in Back To The Future II… I’m betting they do.

Of course, these guys simply just can’t figure out how to remove the sticker: it’s a 50-50 shot either way.

  1. They leave the sticker hat on to show that it’s authentic and not a rip off. Usually seen in areas where counterfits are common. This is not a new practice it’s been happening for many years. I can recall people doing this ten years ago in SoCal.

  2. Weird… just weird. I mean who’s going to care if your hat is a knock off? Rolex? Coach? Louis? Gucci? Sure, that I could see. New Era hat? Um… Weird.

  3. Yea, I don’t get that shit either. Why can’t the counterfitters just knock the sticker off too? That wouldn’t be hard to do, it’s a cheap ass looking foil sticker. I think it looks really dumb.

  4. I know! When people leave the sticker on it’s stupid looking and simply annoying. I’ve heard they “to show it’s authentic” excuse but really, who the hell would question that? If someone calls a person out on their hat being a knock off then they should be shot, any who, on the inside there’s a MLB label that says it’s authentic, shouldn’t that be enough reassurance?

Personally, I think that a few rappers started doing it, which in turn made everyone want to start doing it. I’ve seen it on high school kids more than on anyone else, and we all know how HS is. If you don’t leave your sticker on you’ll be uncool.

    Stupid all around.

  5. to the person above me ^^ People have actually asked me numerous times if my hat was “authentic” because i took off the size sticker. It is stupid.
