Maybe It’s Just Me…

DownloadSquad: Xandros comes very close to addressing those concerns with their latest Linux distro, which has a foolproof setup utility, comes with KDE configured to be as Windows-like as possible, can read and write to Windows partitions, and includes Crossover Office 4.2, which allows many standard Windows apps to run under Linux.

I don’t get it.

It goes on to say that all of these pieces will cost cash and a good chunk of it. Not to mention the tweaking and configuration that goes along with any flavor of Linux… so, maybe it’s just me, but doesn’t this sound ridiculous? I mean, what does it buy you? A different Start button image? It’s not easier… for every Linux wizard you know, you should know five to ten Windows wizards: there’s simply more users out there, so you start with fewer resources. It’s not cheaper. It’s not even better looking.

I’ve had the same argument with people that skin their XP boxes eight ways from Sunday, just to look like a Mac. If you want to see a Mac desktop, get a Mac. Also had the convo with myself when I was trying to use a PowerBook as my primary notebook… if I spent five hours a week to tweak or hack my Mac to act like a PC, I should have a PC. Now we got Linux people trying to turn a Linux desktop into Windows… what does it buy you? I just don’t understand…

Whatever… it all comes down to the same theme: get the right tool for the job that you have to do and do it.
