What does a Native American tribe, government, and an Orca named Luna have in common? A lot, lately, if you’ve been watching the local news, and I’ll give you an extra hint: it’s not a casino.
Somehow a killer whale wandered into a civilized part of WA. River, bay, or creek, I dunno – this story was going on before I got here and I can’t even link to it because of my lack of WiFi. Speaking of WiFi, I’ve secured a townhouse to rent for the next ten months. Ten? Yes, ten. The place that I’ve decided to live in offered leasing from ten to sixteen months only. I looked at a bunch but this place has the best locations (not only is it in Redmond but it’s within walking distance of a number of conveniences (including a Teriyaki house!)) and I like the layout and environment. And then I saw the cable prices: looks like I’ll be spending half as much for a better line up than I had in CT. Hey, Tele-media: you suck.
Best part of all is that it’s got a garage that can handle two cars. Oh, pinch me that I may no longer dream of such a rental property! And once I wake up from that, I have to get a new TV, too. I’m thinking/planning on a 50″ Sony rear LCD projection. Handles 1080i natively and even though it’s a projection I can still see the screen while standing along side of it. I just have to get it… and I can even justify it right now, because I’ll be in the rental for an extra four months that I didn’t plan on – I’ll also wait until next year before I will buy (and have to move again).
Oh, and about the slacking entries (and to friends back home, why I’ve been slacking in email): I still have no Internet access! I’ve been writing a number of entries at home and forgetting to upload them at work – this one will probably be included in that too. Unless I remember to upload it tomorrow… either way, things should get better once I can get my main machine here back online. I can’t even use a dial-up because I don’t have an ISP that isn’t a toll call. It’s a mess, but the machine did make it out here 100% aware: all of it’s data is there. At least I think so anyway. Kinda hard to know for sure without a monitor hooked up to it.
So anyway, a tribe, a government agency, and a whale named Luna are swimming in a river. The government agency sees that there’s huge whale is a small and somewhat shallow body of water. The agency says to itself “we should move Luna and get her back out to sea because she can die in this shallow body of water,” so they start to set up “whale nets” that they can use to bring Luna back to the ocean. The tribe sees that there’s a huge whale in a small and somewhat shallow body of water, but they have a slightly different view of Luna. They believe that Luna is the re-incarnation of their now deceased chief; he died a couple of days before Luna showed up around civilization, so they think it’s him. Consequently, they’ve spent a good deal of time coaxing Luna away from the rescue nets and they’ve succeeded for days now. And the agency doesn’t know what to do, given that the tribe has autonomy from the government.
I’ll do ya one better: it’s a true story…
I’m counting down the days myself until my move. Only about a week to go, and I have a glorious entire month to get everything moved.
I’m still reeling about what sold the place: A three-car garage. W00t!
THREE? *swoon*
Luna is actually in a bay off Vancouver Island but has gotten too friendly with boats, people and seaplanes. Last month it reportedly “nudged’ the pontoon on a seaplane to scratch his back. He’s friendly but pretty big for a lapdog.
The marine biologists have determined that his family pod has returned to the south end of Vancouver Island and they would like to take him down for a family reunion. The pods stay together for life in a matriarchal society and live to be quite old- I think 50s and older.
I’m not sure what the tribe is all about. But it’s interesting.
Sometime this summer you will have to take a whale watching trip. The only one I’ve done myself left from a dock right next to the Orcas Island ferry dock and it was excellent but there are good ones on San Juan Island as well. You can walk on the ferry at Anacortes and avoid the ferry traffic. You are going to love this place!
I feel like one of those WA residents you described that love to tell you how wonderful this place is. Hey, I AM one of those people.
Being in walking distance from a teriyaki house may seem novel and rare right now, but keep your eyes peeled: there are teriyaki houses all over the place.
Well I would take the Whale stories. Instead you’re lucky you moved from CT. We have a governor that decided well I am going to be canned so I’ll resign. First it was the mayors now the governor who will be next in the corruption scandal. I know they are politician what should we expect?! Enjoy the teriyaki house.
Randy – over the last few years we’ve taken an annual whale watching trip over to the san juans. I think Steve even has pics up on his site. You should join us this year if we make it up there! All you do is sit on the bluff at the campground and the whales just pass back and forth playing w/the kyakers. Pretty amazing sight to see!
Harpooning them is even more fun :p

@Dave – We got the new of Roland “all the way” out here… I don’t know if Giordano and Ganim made interstate news, but Governer impeachment/resigning makes for good news coast to coast, it seems…
@Stacy and Steve – Do you get to keep the oil, if you bag a big’un?
