Happy 100th Birthday to… Times Square? It seems so, as I heard it on the news this morning. Seems the “local town green” of New York City was established one century ago today. I guess that this does make sense, given that NYC started at the southern tip of the island and it wasn’t until the late 1800’s that the city planners envisioned the mid-town grid as the city spread itself northwards… and Times Square, being in the near center of the “new grid system” at 42nd street, certainly wouldn’t be oldest landmark of the city: that would have to be south of Alphabet City and north of the Battery (since that’s built on man-made land).
I guess it just feels like it’s been there longer than that.
