A Late Christmas Gift

An unforeseen Christmas gift was dropped in my lap today and I’m absolutely giddy about it: I didn’t come out of a sixth gear the entire length of my commute on i-95 this morning! You have to understand – a good commute most mornings is one where I don’t have to shift back into first and it takes less than an hour to get to work. To get to work in under a half an hour, not hit any lights, nor traffic, and stay in sixth is a divine act – most people too the week off, I’m guessing but this is divine enough for me. Of course, I got to the office before everyone else (so I can’t get in) and I forgot to turn my PC at home on this morning (so I won’t have access to most of my email all day) but I’m still basking in the post-commute euphoric glow. (And it also proves that I’m correct: remove every third driver on the road and there will be less problems every morning!)

  1. Hm, if not coming out of the sixth gear your entire commute was the best christmas present ever than I believe you should give yourself the present of a lifetime and either 1. Get a new job that doesn’t demand a commute. Or 2. Move. You rant a bit much about traffic and commuting- solve your problem buddy.

I somehow stumbled onto your website and I love it. I read the rant about Dunkin Donuts from April,29, 2002 and I couldn’t stop laughing.

  2. @Cate – Oh trust me I’m working on it. (And this wasn’t the best gift – just a late one.) #2 (moving) will come from #1 (new job) as the IT job market sucks in central Connecticut – the jobs that are out there are in southwestern CT and that’s what causes the commuting issue… I just don’t Rant about business much because a) it’s usually too depressing and b) I don’t wanna take away from a book idea I have yet to work on!

The good/bad news is that my contract is almost over so the commute will disappear again – and I’ll be unemployed for a little while… the real problem I have with the commute is that it’s illogical that this problem can continue to get worse each year. That and my state’s solution to fixing it is “take mass transit” or “there’s no trouble with traffic”… that grates on ya after a while.

Thanks for checkin’ out the site, too! Glad ya like it!
